Theresa Brown

tribune staff writer

Theresa Brown, a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019. She was 83.

She was born on May 30, 1936, to the late Earl Smith Jr. and Josephine Richardson in Philadelphia. She was the second of three children.

“TC,” as she was affectionately known, was educated in the Philadelphia public school system. She attended Robert Vaux Junior High School and graduated from Edward Bok Vocation Technical High School in 1954.

Brown had numerous occupations throughout her life. Working in the meat service department of Manusova Supermarket, she met Arthur Brown and they were married on July 17, 1965. Two children were born to their union. She continued working for years at Food-way Market, Caldor’s and Wal-Mart until retiring and becoming the caretaker for her grandchildren.

Brown was baptized at Emmanuel Institutional Baptist Church. In 1970, she and her husband joined Grace United Methodist Church. She served as the Sunday School superintendent, a trustee and a member of the board of directors for the church and the day care. Brown also served as the primary coordinator of the annual church school family outing at Carson Simpson Farm and the annual Sunday School Christmas play for 32 years. She was a member of the GEMS Octogenarians and sang on the church’s Chancellor Choir, the Combined Choir and the Gospel Choir.

Brown was always an early riser who woke everyone in her house with a phone call. She enjoyed watching her favorite miniseries while eating breakfast. She spent her afternoons watching the soap operas and then talking about them with her niece and friends.

“Theresa was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend,” her family said in a tribute.

“She was known for her kindness, gentleness, loving spirit and most of all her generosity in giving and caring for all in need. Her main focus was on the children.”

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Earline and Earl Jr.

She is survived by: her children, Arthur Brown III (Phyllis) and Stephanie Brown-Tomlin (Kirk Tomlin); grandchildren, Antonio, Christina and Christopher Brown and Kirk Jr., Kiara and Kayla Tomlin; great-grandson, Antonio Brown Jr.; cousin, Patty Cherry; and other relatives and friends.

Services were held June 15 at Grace United Methodist Church, 7101 N. 20th St. She is buried in Northwood Cemetery.

Emmanuel Johnson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
