Ronald Merith, a deacon of Christ of Calvary Church, died on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, after a lengthy illness. He was 67.
Merith, affectionately known as “Ronnie,” was born on Oct. 27, 1951, in Belle Glade, Florida, to the late Gracie L. Page and Lorenzo Merith. At the age of 10, he moved to Philadelphia with his mother and brother, Dwight Turman.
He was raised in North Philadelphia and educated in the Philadelphia public school system.
At the age of 15, he met Norma Dula, whom he married on Nov. 25, 1972. They had one daughter.
After starting a family, Merith held numerous jobs until he found a career with Newman & Co. and stayed for 33 years until he retired in 2015.
Merith followed his mother to Beth-El Baptist Church in 1978 and served as a trustee under the Rev. James U. Dryden. In 1985, he and his family became members at the Christ of Calvary Church under the Rev. Abner L. Fortson. He has served in various positions until his illness prevented him from doing so.
Merith has served the church as trustee, head deacon, superintendent, teacher, mentor, co-chair of the Steering committee and on the Loan and Finance committee.
Merith loved music and followed his wife as she sang with the Dryden Jubilee Singers. He also became the videographer for the group for many of their anniversaries. He was often heard singing in the background.
“Ronnie was loving, kindhearted, compassionate and he loved to laugh,” his family said in a tribute. “He loved God and the people of God and was always willing and ready to witness of that love to anyone who would listen.”
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: daughter, Rondella; brother, Dwight Turman (Rebecca); godsons, Paul Jackson and Raymond Castor; god-grandchildren, Terrence Williams Jr. and Taylor Williams; other relatives; and friends.
Services will be held June 22 at Christ of Calvary Church, 500 S. 61st St. Viewing is at 9 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. Burial is in Ivy Hill Cemetery.
