Mary D. Austin was employed by the Parkway Corporation.

Austin died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. She was 86.

She was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Philadelphia to the late Leonard G. Alston Sr. and Rosa Alston.

Austin was educated in the School District of Philadelphia, graduating from West Philadelphia High School.

She was baptized at White Rock Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. W.C. Williamson when the church was located at 52nd and Arch streets. She was a member of the church’s Usher Board’s Adult Usher Unit, the Breakfast Group and the Sheepfold of Joshua/James. Austin studied with the Bread of Life Bible Study Group.

Austin’s career included employment at the Frankford Umbrella Factory and the Arsenal of the United States Government. At the time of her death, she was employed as a greeter by the Parkway Corporation at the Philadelphia Airport. Her family said she was a reliable and dedicated worker.

“She had a wry sense of humor that was often accompanied with a hearty laugh and smile. She was a very loving and giving person who often cared for the ill,” her family said.

Austin was a member of 55 Alive Senior Citizen Group at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church. She was also a longtime resident and member of the 200 North Wilton Street Block Association.

Her family said Austin will be remembered as a firm, outspoken, direct and no-nonsense person.

Her family said she was an excellent baker and she loved to cook. She loved to do arts and crafts and take day trips to Atlantic City.

Austin was preceded in death by her sister, Josephine.

She is survived by her sister, Willie-Ann Gaskins of Jamaica Queens, N.Y.; brother, Leonard Austin Jr. and sister-in-law, Shirley Crandall Austin of Vacaville, Calif.; nephews and nieces, Leonard III, (Ruby), Aubrey (Carla), Regina and Douglas Austin, and Malcolm Gaskins (Renee); and other relatives and friends.

Services were held January 29 at White Rock Baptist Church, 5240 Chestnut Street. Burial was in Rolling Green Memorial Park.
