Carl J. Tavares, a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War, died on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at the Atlanticare Medical Center, Mainland in Galloway, New Jersey. He was 89.
He was born on May 6, 1930 in Philadelphia to Gregorio and Sarah Tavares. He graduated from Southeast Catholic High School for Boys in Philadelphia.
He was a graduate of Saint Augustine‘s College in Raleigh, North Carolina and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He acquired his medical technology certificate from Meharry Medical College. He worked as a researcher for the Veteran’s Association for more than 27 years.
He married Kathryn Barge Tavares and three children were born to their union.
He was an avid reader who traveled the world. He enjoyed boxing and listening to classics. Some of his favorite pastimes were spending time with family and friends while watching Jeopardy and Game of Thrones.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Marceline Tavares and daughter, Melanie Tavares.
He is survived by: his children, Adrienne Wesley (Louis) and Carl Tavares II (Sharon); grandchildren, Leketa (Shannon), Carl III, Cameron, Austin, Shanae, Treven and LeHeist; his great-grandson, Domonic and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held June 25 at 11 a.m. at Slater Funeral Home, 1426 Fitzwater St.
