Barbara Ann Knowles was a former elementary school teacher.

Knowles died on Saturday, July 27, 2013. She was 70.

She was born on June 18, 1943 to the late Raymond Taylor and Mattie Harper in Chester. She was educated in the Chester public school system and graduated from Chester High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from West Chester University and later earned her master’s degree from Beaver College. While at West Chester, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Knowles taught in the Philadelphia School District at Anna L Lingelbach Elementary School for more than 30 years, until her retirement in 2004. She loved teaching students in various subjects and she ended her career introducing them to computer science.

Knowles was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for many years. She was a member of the St. Cecilia’s Choir and was active in many other church functions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Matthew Thompson.

She is survived by her son, Mark David Knowles; daughter-in-law, Sheree Knowles; brothers, Starling Thompson, Jr., and Edward Taylor (Pearlina); grandchildren, Mark Jr., Jasmyn, and Alvieno and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 5421 Germantown Ave.
