Bead Fest to be held in Oaks
The Interweave Bead Fest will be held Aug. 14-18 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. Beading classes will be offered on Aug. 14 and the Expo Marketplace will be held Aug. 16-18.
This year’s event will offer nearly 150 different classes, live demonstrations and a marketplace with jewelry supplies and handmade, one-of-a-kind beads.

Lawmaker to host picnics in local parks
State Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione invites the families of the 2nd Senate District to her annual community picnics.
The picnics will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Lawncrest Recreation Center and Aug. 22 at Wissinoming Park. The picnics will feature live DJs, refreshments, back-to-school giveaways and vendors.
Allstate, National Liberty Museum to host school supply drive
Allstate and the National Liberty Museum will host a school supply donation drive through Aug. 16 at various Allstate locations throughout the City. The school supplies will benefit Philadelphia public schools and students participating in the National Liberty Museum’s Young Heroes Outreach Program.
Items needed for the donation drive include dry-erase markers, black and blue pens, #2 pencils, composition books, construction paper, lined paper, glue sticks, sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, spiral notebooks and printer paper.

Pet adoption drive to be held Aug. 17
NBC10, Telemundo62 and local animal shelters/rescues present the fifth annual Clear the Shelters event on Aug. 17. Over 60 locations will participate and offer waived adoption fees to help families adopt a pet.

Organization to host back-to-school giveaway
Conquerors Community Development Corp. will give away free bookbags and school supplies to children at their annual Back2School block party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at 52nd Street and Whitby Avenue. The event will include activities for children, vendors, and consumer and health information.

Community fair to be held in Chester
The Better Living Center (BLC) Community Development Corp. presents a community fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at 501 Yarnall St. in Chester.
The event will feature more than 20 vendors and service providers, including local businesses and non-profit organizations. It will also include a children’s fun zone with activities hosted by the Philadelphia Union soccer team. Funds raised during the event will help fund BLC programs throughout the year.

Back-to-school event to be held on Venango St.
State Rep. Rosita Youngblood will present a back-to-school event from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia, 1939 W. Venango St.
The first 150 people to pre-register a child in grades K-8 and who live in the 198th Legislative District will receive a free backpack. There is a limit of three backpacks per family.

Back-to-school boot camp set at rec center
The Urban Media Literacy Organization and True Way Youth Empowerment Foundation will present a back-to-school boot camp for youth and families from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Cobbs Creek Recreation Center, 280 Cobbs Creek Parkway.
The event will include workshops on issues such as returning to school with anxiety, bullying, inclusion (respecting students with learning differences), self-regulation, summer reading, character, effective study habits, time management, goal setting, and the benefits of eating healthy and resting well.
