Lawmaker to host picnics in August

State Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione invites the families of the Second Senate District to her annual community picnics.

The picnics will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Fairhill Square Park, Aug. 15 at Lawncrest Recreation Center and Aug. 22 at Wissinoming Park.

The picnics will feature live DJs, refreshments, back-to-school giveaways and vendors.

CCP to host Girls STEM Camp

Community College of Philadelphia will offer a week-long “Girls in STEM” camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the week of Aug. 12 at CCP’s West Regional Center’s Auto Tech Center, 4731 Ludlow St.

The camp is geared toward middle school girls. Throughout the week, attendees will learn about cars, transportation, fossil fuels and greenhouse gases, gear ratios, electric motors and more. They will also have the opportunity to build their own model cars and participate in a field trip across the city.

Bead Fest to be held in August

The Interweave Bead Fest will be held Aug. 14-18 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. Beading classes will be offered on Aug. 14 and the Expo Marketplace will be held Aug. 16-18.

This year’s event will offer nearly 150 different classes to choose from over the course of five days. The Marketplace will have everything from handmade, one-of-a-kind beads to jewelry supplies and live demonstrations.

Back-to-school giveaway to be held in August

Conquerors Community Development Corp. will give away free book bags and school supplies to children at their annual Back2School block party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at 52nd and Whitby Ave. The event will include activities for children, vendors and consumer and health information.

The Unified Network Initiative presents a community day event from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at Carroll Park, 59th Street and Girard Avenue. The event will feature live entertainment, vendors and activities for children.
