A man has been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl hit by a bullet as she was getting off a bus in north Philadelphia over the weekend, authorities said.

Robert Jamieson, 41, is charged with murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and weapons offenses in the death of the victim, who was hit in the shoulder as she stepped off a bus at about 4:40 p.m. Saturday.

The city's acting police commissioner said the suspect appeared to be randomly firing at people. Police said at least 14 shots were fired, and his gun was empty when he was captured hiding behind a car.

District Attorney Larry Krasner said a felony drug conviction barred Jamieson from carrying a firearm.

"What good are laws that prohibit those with certain criminal records from being able to carry firearms when guns are so plentiful in our county and commonwealth?" Krasner said in a statement.

Court documents indicate that Jamieson will be represented by the Defender Association of Philadelphia, which couldn't be reached for comment Sunday.

The city has seen a number of juveniles killed or wounded by gunfire in recent weeks, including a 2-year-old girl shot to death while in her mother's arms. On the day before Thanksgiving, a man cleaning his gun accidentally shot himself and his 9-year-old son, sending both of them to the hospital, authorities said.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the city had recorded 1,347 people shot as of Friday, not including several weekend shootings, and more than 100 shooting victims this year were under age 18.
