Former Philadelphia NAACP committee leader Manuel “Wali” Smith Sr. has been arrested and charged with robbing a bank in Baltimore, according to published reports.

Smith, 58, faces charges of armed robbery, first- and second-degree assault, use of a firearm and related counts, according to the reports.

He remained in jail without bail on Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5 in Baltimore.

According to the reports, Smith robbed the Bank of America at 100 S. Charles St. in Baltimore on Aug. 2.

He approached a bank teller with his hand in his suit coat pocket and said, “Don’t push any buttons or I will pop you,” according to charging documents. A bank employee gave him an undisclosed amount of money and he left before police arrived.

According to the documents, five days later, on Aug. 7, Smith approached an officer and turned himself in.

Philadelphia police had been looking for Smith, who went missing earlier this month. His family reported him missing on Aug. 8, said his son, Manuel Smith Jr.

"We are disappointed," Manuel Smith Jr. told The Tribune on Wednesday night. "This does not sound like the Wali Smith that we know and love. We are looking for an explanation of what occurred."

Manuel Smith Jr. told The Tribune on Tuesday that his father was last seen on Aug. 1. The next day, Manuel Smith Sr. had plans to rent a car and go on an outing with his brother, whom he helps care for, Manuel Smith Jr. said.

“But he just never showed up that morning,” Manuel Smith Jr. said about his father. “This is a functioning adult who really was there one day and isn’t there the next, and there’s no answers to why that happened.”

Manuel Smith Sr., of the 100 block of North Peach Street in West Philadelphia, also had not shown up for work since Aug. 5, according to his son.

In addition to his work with the NAACP, Manuel Smith Sr. has been working on anti-violence initiatives with the City of Philadelphia.
