Gregory T. Burrell

Gregory T. Burrell, president and CEO of Terry Funeral Home Inc. in West Philadelphia, has been elected chairman of the State Board of Funeral Directors.

In becoming the first African American to serve as chairman in more than 20 years, Burrell will lead the board that regulates and oversees the licensing of funeral directors throughout Pennsylvania. He was first appointed to the panel in 2007 by former Gov. Ed Rendell and reappointed by former Gov. Tom Corbett in 2014.

In August 2006, Burrell was elected corporate secretary of the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association, the oldest and largest organization of African-American funeral directors in the world. He was installed as its 63rd general president in 2011 and was the first Pennsylvanian to hold the office in the group’s 88-year-old history.

A graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science and Morehouse College, Burrell is a civic-minded business leader. He is a member of Monumental Baptist Church, where he serves as chairman of its board of trustees. He is also a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Guardsmen, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Boulé), a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the Morehouse College National Alumni Association.

Burrell is married to Maria Earl and has three children: Mercedes, a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University and Trinity University; Jordan, a senior at Morehouse College; and Morgan, a freshman at Spelman College.
