The former Sharia Octavia Mitchell and Yaasmiyn Bashiyra Mapp were married in a beautiful afternoon ceremony on March 10 at United Church of Christ at Valley Forge officiated by the Rev. Meagan McLeod. Sharia’s ivory, satin wedding gown featured a corset, A-line design. The beaded and stitched detail on the front and train of the gown were perfect touches to complete the look. Yaasmiyn selected a wedding gown that combined elegance and simplicity. Her lace gown and train were completed a beautiful pearl and rhinestone waist band. Both were stunning,

How They Met ... The Proposal
Sharia and Yaasmiyn met while students at Penn State University.
It was Christmas Day (2016) and Yaasmiyn gave Sharia her Christmas gifts. Her last gift was a plaque that had a small poem on it that asked Sharia to marry her. As Sharia read it, Yaasmiyn opened her heart and asked Sharia to marry her as she pulled the ring from behind her back. Sharia started crying as she said yes with a big smile. Sharia’s mom scrambled to get the camera to record every second of this memorable experience.
Reflections ... In their words
Yaasmiyn: “My wedding day will always be a day that I will remember. I thought that the reception would be my most memorable part, but the ceremony was very powerful and very memorable. I wouldn’t call this experience my new life, but I now feel complete and more excited to experience my future with Sharia.”
Sharia: “I still am in shock that I can say I am Mrs. Mapp. I used to play around and call Yaasmiyn my wife because I felt that we already were married, but now I can actually say that she will forever be my wife. My wedding day was all that a girl could dream of and I am so happy that I had all of our family there to support us.”
Since Yaasmiyn and Sharia are in school, planning their wedding required a great deal of time management for both. Sharia shared, “I had to do a lot of the heavy work because once I graduated and had more time to do things pertaining to the wedding than Yaasmiyn. She always asked to help but I cared about her making sure her work was done first. She made sure she was there for the very important parts of the planning such as selecting the wedding cake, music and menu. Yaasmiyn always told me how much she appreciated my dedication and passion in making sure this was the wedding of our dreams.”
Everyone enjoyed a wonderful reception at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia. One of the couple’s favorite memories of the reception was an ice sculpture, which was a blowup of the plaque Yaasmiyn gave Sharia when she proposed. Another highlight was the bridal party dance that Sharia and Yaasmiyn taught to the bridal party. Guests were thrilled when they performed the dance during the reception. Another highlight was the couple’s surprise wardrobe change in the middle of the reception.
One of their guests caught the coveted garter and bridesmaid Tamera caught the exquisite bouquet. Yaasmiyn and Sharia’s first dance was to a mix of songs (“711,” “It Won’t Stop” “and Team Lilman Anthem, part 2”) that they choreographed together. “We decided we wanted to share the parent dances, so Sharia danced with her mother and Yaasmiyn danced with her father to start of the parent dances. We then switched partners and we danced with each other’s parents. Instead of the traditional slow dance, we decided we wanted to bop with our parents to the song ‘Jazzy Lady.’”
Yaasmiyn and Sharia traveled to scenic Cancun, Mexico, for their honeymoon. They both enjoyed experiencing different adventurous activities such as horseback riding, zip lining and driving ATVs together as a married couple. They also were able to have a great time on a cruise where they won two bottles of Champagne for getting a question right in a fun game and winning a dance contest.
Congratulations and best wishes to Yaasmiyn Bashiyra Mapp and Sharia Octavia Mapp!
