City Councilwoman Cindy Bass’ office (D-8) presented its 7th annual Summer Event Series with a Jazz, Funk and Soul concert on Tuesday evening at Morris Estate.

The series originally began in 2013 as the weekly “Oldies in the Park” in Vernon Park. Now, it includes a movie night at Logan School; a “Showtime at the Apollo” in Stenton Park and the live music concert at Morris Estate, all of which are efforts Bass said are designed to reclaim public spaces, especially those that might have been forgotten.

“One of the things we want to do is end the myth that we can’t have productive and positive things in our neighborhood that bring people out. This is a beautiful site tonight - seeing people from all over the neighborhood ” said Bass. “[And] this is a way we plant our flags to say we are not going anywhere. We are reclaiming our public spaces.”

The kick off concert at Morris Estate was deejayed by Gary O and mc’ed by WDAS’ Patty Jackson.

The Urban Guerrilla Orchestra was the featured act of the evening.

An estimated 300 to 400 people attended the event - some alone and others with their spouses, children or friends. There were also a few vendors, a new component Bass said was added to “support our minority businesses.”

“It brings people together. We need more things to bring people together. A lot of people walk by in the community and don’t event speak,” said Crystal Wells, who attended the concert with her husband. Wells said she is a regular at the summer concerts, having come each year it’s been held at Morris Estate. She said she tries to get the word out to others in the neighborhood.

“It seems like it’s more people from outside the neighborhood. I’ve been posting on Facebook to let people know."

Vern Moore, a father who brought his 8-year-old daughter, said he also attends the concerts every year. This is the first time his daughter joined him.

“I like the music. I like the atmosphere. [And] I can bring my daughter with me to show her how it’s supposed to be done,” he said.
