“The Paynes,” a spinoff of Tyler Perry’s popular, long-running sitcom “House of Payne,” comes to OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, with Cassi Davis and LeVan Davis reprising their roles as Ella and Curtis Payne. The series, which premiered on Tuesday, will air Fridays at 9 p.m.

“I don’t know about you, but I feel that we could all use a good old-fashioned laugh right about now,” Tyler Perry said on Oprah.com. “That’s why I’m bringing the Paynes back — Curtis and Ella — in the new show called ‘The Paynes,’ with a brand new Payne. Her name is Joann, played by the legendary Jackée Harry. The Paynes have a new home, right here on OWN!”

Perry’s original series, “House of Payne,” which ran from 2006 to 2012, revolved around a multi-generational family living under one roof in Atlanta, with Curtis (LeVan Davis) toiling away as chief of the local fire department, and Ella (Cassi Davis) holding it down as a loving, level-headed and efficient stay-at-home mom.

When the series began, fan favorite Allen Payne played C.J. Payne, who was initially written as Curtis and Ella’s son, but later rewritten as their nephew. As the series came to a close, Curtis retired from the fire department with C.J. replacing him as chief. According to the entertainment website IMDB.com, Allen Payne has, indeed, shot at least one episode for Perry’s new production.

As “The Paynes” gets underway, Curtis and Ella are enjoying their retirement when a death in the family takes them on the road to Florida, where Curtis is roped into a real estate deal that will “tumble their lives like clothes in a dryer — with plenty of laughs and life lessons along the way.”

“To see these characters now come alive on the OWN network is like a dream come true,” Cassi said on Oprah.com.

LeVan added, “What a beautiful, blessed journey. The people who support the show and have followed us and are still with us, man, this is a beautiful thing. And now, we at the top!”

In tonight’s episode, airing in its regular Friday 9 p.m. slot, Curtis is out for blood after he realizes that he has been swindled. Later, Ella has a change of heart after visiting the local church where she meets Nyla (Stephanie Charles) a beautiful young woman in need. As the series continues on Jan. 26, the Paynes begin to settle into their new life with the help of their cousins, and Ella is concerned about Nyla’s disappearance.

Obviously delighted with the latest turn of events, Cassi stated, “To the fans that have supported us all these years, I just want to say ‘thank you!’ We would not be here if it were not for you!”
