TV has the Emmys. Broadway has the Tonys. Here in the Greater Philadelphia professional theater scene, we have the Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre.
The goal of the Barrymore Awards is to celebrate local artists and theater companies while highlighting the region’s diverse voices and stories being told. Winners were announced at a ceremony that took place Tuesday night at the Bok. Arden Theatre Company’s Gem of the Ocean took home nine awards followed closely by Theatre Horizon’s The Color Purple with seven awards including Brown Martin Award.
This year’s Barrymore Awards honored playwright and educator, Edgar J. Shockley III, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. His plays include Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, The Oracle, Slave Narratives Revisited, The Corner, Badman, Stone Mansion, and Bobos.
Thanks to the support from local philanthropists, the Barrymores awarded $92,000 to artists and individuals:
