President George Washington’s teeth. —Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association

Ever since I began writing this Freedom’s Journal column at the Tribune back in 2015, I always wrote about upcoming events. For example, I’d write that an anniversary date is approaching and then I’d discuss it in detail. But I never wrote about something after it had already passed — well, not until now. And now I’m writing about President’s Day, which was a few days ago on February 19.

I’m actually writing about President George Washington — more specifically, his teeth. I mean my ancestors’ teeth.

And I’m writing about their teeth in The Tribune because racist white folks went crazy trying to defend Washington when I posted some of this historically truthful information on my Facebook page on February 19.

In fact, they unwittingly played a key role in making my post go viral. I love when I make racists angry. And now I’m gonna make ‘em even angrier because this newspaper reaches much more people than my Facebook page does. So here we go.

President’s (not Presidents’) Day is officially called George Washington’s Birthday according to federal legislation. It was created in 1885 to honor the man who enslaved 316 Black human beings at his Mt. Vernon, VA plantation and who transported nine of them beginning in 1790 to America’s first “White House,” which was located right here in Philly at Sixth and Market.

By the way, there is not and never has been a “Presidents’” Day to honor both Washington and Lincoln or Washington and any other president. In 2001, there was a congressional attempt in the form of House Resolution 420 to combine Washington’s February 22 birthday and Lincoln’s February 12 birthday. But it died after failing to get past a subcommittee vote.

Let’s get back to the enslaved Black folks. It wasn’t just their entire bodies that Washington robbed them of; he also robbed many of them of their teeth. Yes- their teeth! In 1784, Washington had the teeth of enslaved Black adults “transplanted into” his mouth. And five years later, a dentist in Philadelphia made Washington’s first set of total dentures (shown above) from teeth that were “yanked from the heads of his slaves.”

If you don’t believe me, read George Washington’s Teeth: An Unconventional Guide to the Eighteenth Century, which is a meticulously researched book written by Dr. Robert Darnton, an award-winning author and professor. And if you don’t believe him, read George Washington: An Imperfect God, His Slaves, and the Creation of America, which is a thoroughly documented book written by award-winning author and historian Henry Wiencek.

But if you still don’t believe it and still think Washington wouldn’t have done such a despicable thing and that such barbarism was beneath him, please continue reading.

From age 11, in 1743, until his death at 67 in 1799, Washington (and his wife Martha Washington) enslaved Africans and their descendants.

And he had a habit of being an unsanitary miser who, at Mt. Vernon, issued to his enslaved Blacks for use as their garments “dirty,” “fouled,” and “manure”-soaked wool from the stomach of sheep.

Similarly, many of those Black laborers had to resort to rummaging for “coarse burlap bags” to use as clothing because Washington refused to adequately clothe them. As Wiencek stated during a 2003 radio interview, Washington’s “slaves were miserably clothed … (In fact, they) were so badly clothed that they were stealing the wheat sacks made of the cheapest, roughest burlap to repair their own clothes … Otherwise, (they) would go around in rags.”

In providing so-called shelter, Washington’s treatment of his fellow men and women was just as bad. Consistent with Wiencek’s statement that Washington’s enslaved Black workforce was “miserably housed … (in) a very harsh place” is the observation of Julian Niemcewicz, a Polish poet who resided at Mt. Vernon for two weeks in 1798 and who described the living conditions of many of the enslaved population:

“We entered some negroes’ huts, for their habitations cannot be called houses. They are far more miserable than the poorest of the cottages of our peasants. The husband and his wife sleep on a miserable bed, the children on the floor. A very poor chimney, a little kitchen furniture amid this misery—a teakettle and cups. A boy about fifteen was lying on the floor with an attack of dreadful convulsions....”

If you want even more irrefutable evidence of Washington’s outrageously inhumane treatment of enslaved Black men, women, and children, Google my 2005 article published in the scholarly Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography. It is entitled “The ‘Black Eye’ on George Washington’s ‘White House.’”

And please remember next year on President’s Day to display your proud American patriotism by showing your pearly whites and smiling. Or don’t.

Wow history tried to make this man seem like he was an angel. But in essence he was just like all other white slave owners. Barbaric and hateful to the people of color.

Guest

Do you really think that could happen? The roots of the yanked teeth would die, not to ,mention the high risk for infection for Washington. THERE WERE NO ANTIBIOTICS THEN. Mystr;ies at the museum said his teeth were made of ivory. Now maybe they carved the ivory for him.

Guest

I had my baby teeth for almost 50 years. Yes, the roots had died, but they were still teeth.

Guest

I visited Mt. Vernon as an elementary student. They has the slave quarters which were small houses, didn't look too bad because they were probably renovated. To my child's mind I could not fathom how people could live in such small spaces. Fast forward to college. I revisit Mt. Vernon...no slave quarters...they had sanitized history
.

Guest

Don't think you did sir

Guest

if the roots had died, how did they stay connected to your gums ? Calculus ?

Guest

My children's baby teeth, after falling out broke into pieces just a year later. So dead and brittle.

Guest

Baby teeth don't have roots

Guest

Me to

Guest

Baby teeth don’t have roots

Guest

Where did your second set of teeth go? I had to have 4 baby teeth removed at the age of 12 because the adult set were growing up behind them.

Guest

Apparently none of you had a dental education

Guest

They could not have been implanted into someone else’s mouth successfully. Especially 200 years ago.

Guest

I doubt you kept your baby teeth in your mouth, dude where bacteria and acid would continue dissolving them.

Guest

It still goes on today. Crackhead prices for televisions today. Crackhead prices for teeth back then. I wouldn't have paid them shhit. I would've just yanked their teeth right put for the fun of it. Then went to town and bought some good teeth from white people. No way I'd stick niggger teeth in my mouth! I guess they weren't aware of aids and such back then. You know what, you're right about us whites being so evil. I think you should pack up and go back to Africa. I'm sure the ruling class will treat and provide for you much better :)

Guest

that selfish man would just pull another from his PROPERTY

Guest

Baby teeth have no roots.....

Guest

Baby teeth don't fall out with roots. The baby teeth fall out once the very small root has been absorbed by the body.

Guest

They were dentures not transplants, so the tooth wasn’t meant to be alive.

RH

I've gone twice in the last 4 years. The slave quarters are still there. Maybe they were just being renovated when you went back.

Guest

The previous story of his teeth being made of wood would also conclude that they weren't implants with need for roots. These were dentures. Does anyone really believe implants were even imaginable at that time? Smh

Guest

a tooth can still be attached to the gum even though it's dead. my front tooth has been dead for 30 years and I still use it. recently my dentist simply repair a chip that have been in for almost 20 years. so yes a dead tooth can still remain in a person's mouth with no problems. as long as it gums are healthy.

Guest

Baby teeth do have roots that r3solve on their own. I know because my daughters didn't resolve, therefore they wouldn't fall out to make room for her adult teeth and they had to be pulled. 19 years later they are still in tact. Root and tooth. 14 of them.

Guest

I am 32 and I still have THREE BABY TEETH in my mouth. And they are not even loose.

Guest

Oh the ignorance! baby teeth fall out if the teeth underneath grow and resorb them (eat them away). Adults can keep the teeth for lfe if that doesn't happen and they are healthy. As for the teeth in George's dentures, this was a common practice in the 10th Century. In Britain, the colelcted teeth to be put on the dentures were called "Waterloo teeth" and were supposed to have been extracted from soldiers on the battlefield. More likely form all sorts of dead people, and displayed on cards so the denture maker could choose the right tooth, cut off the root and embed it into the denture base. Lovely, they also would get decay if the denture wearer ate the wrong foods

Guest

I’m 29 and still have a baby canine tooth my adult canine grew in sideways inside my gum line and it would take surgery to correct.... but my baby tooth is fine lol

Guest

Why do you see the word transplant without understanding that that is a misnomer..of course they did not transplant like you would a tree... they sought out materials to make dentures for a wealthy customer. You can tell by the picture they are not carved of wood or ivory. They are human teeth. You can probably imagine that a high end customer would prefer not to use a cadaver's teeth. You might even imagine that one who treated his property as Washington is recorded as doing would have no qualms about harvesting material from that property.

Guest

They are NOT teeth.

Guest

Agree!

Guest

^and you two would know...how? Those definitely look like real teeth. You just don't want to believe the truth of our first president.

Guest

I’m a dentist, and I can tell you that those are real human teeth.

Guest

Washington had the teeth of enslaved Black adults “transplanted into” his mouth. And five years later, a dentist in Philadelphia made Washington’s first set of total dentures (shown above) from teeth that were “yanked from the heads of his slaves.”

Guest

This part here "Washington had the teeth of enslaved Black adults “transplanted into” his mouth. " made me suddenly think of those modern dental implants that some people choose to get today, instead of dentures. However, I doubt that was what they did with the teeth, instead using them for dentures, which is disgusting nonetheless. (Given that dental implants actually exist in the modern day, after reading this, now I'm slightly paranoid that my wisdom teeth and a few others are now being used as dental implants in other people's mouths. o.O)

Craig Welch

"You can probably imagine that a high end customer would prefer not to use a cadaver's teeth". Why not? I have dental implants, and before the procedure I had to have bone transplants to fill a hole. Where did the bone come from? Cadavers. Care factor? Zero.

Guest

No he stole them from blacks. As most white folks steal blacks inventions and try to call them their own. Just admit that the treatment of blacks were horrible. Whites want to be so much like blacks. Which is why they tan for darker skin and get collegen in their lips to have more pronounced lips. Yet y'all call us monkeys but hat that y'all can't be like us. Look at Black Panther we did 500 million no marvel comic has ever done that. The power of blacks when and if we stick together

Guest

HORSE TEETH UPPER - GOAT & HORSE TEETH LOWER. Sad, all these "Get Educated" college indoctrinates who have no critical thinking skills. "Definitely NOT human teeth". See NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC cover expose on President Washington; google it. The extremely uncomfortable dentures are DETAILED.

Guest

In this day and age, it's pretty easy to extract DNA. Human teeth or ivory would be simple to prove. Not to mention the fact that ivory is just the teeth of another animal. And since they considered slaves to be animals in the 1700s, why wouldn't they refer to a slave's teeth as ivory? That misnomer could be passed down until science proved otherwise.

Ivory are not teeth, they are tusks

[wink]

Guest

DNA can only be extracted from human teeth if the pulp is viable. There's no DNA in the tooth enamel. Forensic identification involving teeth usually relies on dental records. The word "ivory" is not used to refer to human teeth, nor was it used to refer to human teeth during Washington's lifetime. #fail

Guest

Not only does America have history but it had history before the new comers came and destroyed indigenous peoples history and culture and black history but they lie and enhance there own history to suit their liking and hide what they did.....

Guest

Did you even read?

DENTURES. The same thing you put in your mouth in the morning. But they were not wood, they were pulled from black men and women that he owned.

Again. They were dentures, made from the parts he cannibalized from the people he kept as property. They didn’t just shove teeth into his jawbone. Duh.

Guest

This is so disgusting. Read Erica Dunbar Never Caught. He hunted a runaway slave to the ends of the earth because he could. ..

Guest

They don't read

Guest

A man purportedly treating his slaves as such, would not surprisingly providing dental care. If they came from humans under this kind of care, they would have come from dead humans. Although I suspect the "dentist" would have procured the teeth, if the above story is true.

Guest

They DID put other people's teeth in his gums, which was common practice back then (look it up!). They ALSO made him dentures from slaves teeth.

Guest

" read George Washington’s Teeth: An Unconventional Guide to the Eighteenth Century, which is a meticulously researched book written by Dr. Robert Darnton, an award-winning author and professor. I know its hard to believe that Anglo ancestors were cruel, barbaric, and guilty of some of the most gruesome crimes and deeds on other humans than any other race has committed but uh yeah, your boy did it! No different than the cruelties that the white man has done to Jews, Africans, and native Americans. Its also interesting, I might add, that your first concern was for that of Washington, and not for the poor person who's head he yanked these teeth from.

Guest

I know slaves were treated worse than deplorable. At first I thought Washington would be appalled at having a servants teeth out in his own mouth— but White men raped & kept Black mistresses- so take every dignity includingbteeth is not surprising. I will read more about this!! I wish I was young again - & had history classes that taught truth!!
Thank you !

Guest

But why is it hard to believe. the cruelest things that have been done have been done by white people. they took slavery to the next level, the mass shootings are done by them. Lynching was a past time that they subjected their children too. there was a doctor during colonial times would try to cure black babies of their illiteracy by sticking a hook in their head. He also did a gynecological test on African American women with no anesthesia. He said that we didn't feel pain. so yea it really isn't that hard to believe

Guest

amen

Guest

This story is absolute BS. Washington's false teeth were made from Ivory. Just look at the picture and compare the teeth with your own, the bottoms are too flat.
http://www.mountvernon.org/digital-encyclopedia/article/false-teeth/

Guest

TRUTH!

Guest

No different than the cruelties that the white man has done to Jews, Africans, and native Americans. ...And cruelties to Catholics, Irish and their Anglo neighbors. I look back on Anglo history and wonder how we became the "uncivilized barbarians"?!

Guest

II don’t know what to believe about this article!
The upper teeth look like very uniform in shape and flat at the ends like a cookie cutter teeth , those slaves must had just alike shape of teeth if it comes from many slaves. Hmm
They hardly look real , but if they were real why not to get them from somebody already diseased!!

Guest

Yes, it could really happen and the practice is well documented and given the lack of knowledge of antibiotics such concerns would not be as they are now.

look it up. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/video/lives.html

Guest

They didn't implant into his gums they were used to make his dentures. Reading is fundamental

Guest

Transplanted as dentures. And yes they were. Please do more research before responding

Guest

As I have read over the years, dear old George had many different pairs of choppers.

Guest

Washington had more than one set of false teeth. Some are made of ivory and animal teeth, but indeed, even at My Vernon, they acknowledge that The General did have slaves teeth removed. The also were issued only one set of clothing per year.

Guest

He said they were made into dentures , not literally implanted

Cindy

The teeth were made into dentures, they weren't placed in the gums of Washington's mouth.

Guest

It actually states that the teeth were "transplanted" into his mouth. The dentures were made 5 years later.

Ana

they didn't transplant the teeth in his jaw, as u can see they attached it to a wooden contraption

Guest

You are wrong, completely wrong.

Guest

They weren't dental implants. They don't need the root to be used as a denture.

Guest

They are put into a prosthetic, you know, like dentures, not implanted directly into Washington's jaw.

Guest

That is NOT what the article said.

Guest

I believe this as very possible. Regardless of the roots, the teeth were pulled and made into dentures. Those teeth didn't need roots for they were held in by whatever material they used. No need for him to use antibiotics and from what I can tell the slaves weren't issued any antibiotics that wouldn't have been customary for treatment of slaves. Most likely the slave owners didn't care if their slaves hurt, suffered or even fell ill or died. I am going to go with the story is more accurate than the claim of his teeth were made it Ivory. That's more nonesense to allow history to perceive This slave owner "Washington" to be a good and humble man... YEAH RIGHT

Guest

I think the slave owners would care about the health of a slave because how would the "owner" get any or some work out of ailing slaves? I know they were beaten and can't imagine why. I only know if my income depended on the production others do for me on a daily basis, why would I cut off my hand to gain a tooth?

Guest

Antibiotics? That would be interesting because antibiotics were not discovered until 1928, a few years after the end of both Washington and slavery. If you meant anesthesia, then you'd be closer. Nitrous was discovered to have anesthetic effects the year Washington died, but you're right, they probably wouldn't have offered either to slaves, anyway.

Guest

"Most likely the slave owners didn't care if their slaves hurt, suffered or even fell ill or died." The "died" part is certainly wrong as a rule, as the enslaved person was 1) was valuable property, 2) provided the labor needed in order for the plantation to be profitable. (Common sense.)

Guest

No antibiotics but there were hardly many infections either this is very possible! You can re implant teeth I’ve seen it done more the once !!

Guest

Lol. ....cared about the health of their slaves? Ha! That’s why they had to come up with chitterlings, because the scraps they received were not enough. They beat them and raped them. That REALLY shows great health care!

Guest

If you go to the Mt. Vernon website it says the dentures were made from ivory, animal and human teeth.

Guest Wes

You refute what the article says. You guess Washington's made was made of ivory. Guesses don't count unless corroborated by specific historical references to the statement you made.

Guest

My. Vernon says it's ivory, animal bones, and the teeth of slaves. Is that "historic" enough?

Guest

He had dentures. Not implants. Read books, sir.

Guest

Horrible to believe isnt it, but that's your history...and it gets worse. Why dont you read the cited texts?

Use your brain

Ivory is bone. Since there wete no readily available elephants in America at the time where do you think they got it?

Guest

Mhm, yes, because America never traded with anyone. (Note: sarcasm). I’m not saying they aren’t human teeth, but please do some research before you spout fallacies and tell people to use their brains. If you need proof, look up pretty much any teapot made in America in the 18th century. They all contain ivory (which is a name of an animal material).

Guest

No one will die from yanking teeth out. It will be painful and bleed but will heal. You get your teeth pulled now, they give you pain pills. Antibiotics are only given for an infection not just a bad tooth. They pull, cotton for bleeding and pain meds.

Guest

On the contrary, if infection sets in, a person could very well die. The mouth is quite germ laden.

Guest Susan

People did die from extracting teeth. They bled to death and died from infection since there was no antibiotics. After all Washington died of an infection which most likely was strep throat/scarlet fever.

Guest

Actually the royalty of Europe would attempt to replace teeth from their Ladies in Waiting. Apparently on rare occasions it worked, at least for awhile. False teeth were often made from dead soldiers. We live in much better times, let's enjoy and be grateful.

Guest

Actually, it was common practice to transplant teeth. Oftentimes poor folks would sell their teeth to rich folks who would have them transplanted into their mouths. The nerve tissue inside of the tooth would die, of course. The transplant would most likely be unsuccessful and all manner of diseases were spread in this way. I have no doubt that this story of George Washington's teeth is true.

Guest

Teeth are regularly reimplanted when there’s an accident. I worked for a dentist who treated a hockey team. Sometimes the teeth held and sometimes they fell out but cleaning and sticking them back in the gums is what they try now. I’m sure they yanked them from slaves and soaked them in rum before implanting them into the disgusting people owner’s head.

Guest

Washington both asked his slaves and paid them for their teeth. He tried wood and ivory, first. He had to switch back to the ivory when the slaves teeth didn’t fit. This was a common practice back then.

Guest

He had dentures made from the teeth, not implants. So the teeth were cleaned and put into a denture plate. No infection from that. Yes it did happen.

Guest

Ivory is usually from elephant tusks which are the elephant’s incisor teeth.

Guest

Are you a dentist? So how do you know what happens to the roots of extracted teeth. Also, how do you think dentists practice their root canals while in dental school? Off extracted teeth, Thank you!!

Guest

Seems it was not an uncommon practice at the time to use human teeth set in ivory. More humane folks would use teeth pulled from already dead people. Here is an article on the practice: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33085031

Guest

you just hate to believe the facts huh.... i suppose you believed he never told a lie either?

Guest

They didn't transplant them, they used them to make dentures. I can't even imagine the pain in having healthy teeth yankef out with no pain medication.

Guest

Why would cruel slave owners go through the trouble of carving teeth out of imported ivory when they had slaves right there that they could yank the teeth out of? They didn't care if 1 of 300 slaves died. Think.

Guest

They were used in a set of dentures. One can sanitize anything by boiling it. Read the source material if youre interested in learning for yourself

Guest

Nah. Those are real teeth. You could boil them then set them in wood with glue. No doubt they wore some and fell out. So get more. Washington was a committed slaver. So was Thomas Jefferson. It was Jefferson who sent an armed force to destroy the French slave refuge at St Augustine in Florida...... Because it gave escaping slaves somewhere to run to.

The founders of America were heroes in many ways, but they are far from perfect. In some ways, to some people, they were simply evil.

It's true.

Guest

Actually, it happens all the time. When our hockey players lose a tooth we put it right back in. The root is still live and it eventually will regrow in the same location. Hench you do not end up losing that tooth.

Guest

They were made into dentures... it’s says in the article. Not actual implants

Guest

Dentures don’t need roots 😭😭😭😭

Guest

Hippo Ivory according to reliable sources. Washington did not own the slaves, his wife did.

Guest

Ummm, no. Martha did bring some slaves into the marriage but married women owned nothing. And GW bought and sold many, many slaves. I don't know why there's all this debate when there is a TON of actual academic research (not Google) on the Washingtons and their slaves.

Guest

So you don't want to believe it. I can almost sympathize with that, nobody likes having their heroes torn down or their bubble burst. What I can't sympathize with is your next step, which is to declare it impossible without even bothering to check. The practice of making dentures from real teeth was hardly limited to Washington, and such dentures still exist, as a simple Google search would have told you. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-33085031

Guest

Actually, his teeth were made from multiple sources including donkey, horse, hippo, etc. Yes he had dentures made with teeth from black people, but it's not like they were the only source.

Guest

Haha, you're reaching...

TH Pickett

If you look at the picture above, you'll see the teeth have no roots. They are strung together with wire. Washington was not the only wealthy white man to do this.

Thatonechick

Yeah. Those people that got their teeth yanked out probably just died, and then they threw out the body with the garbage. Messed up.

Guest

Some people would rather argue based on his opinion, and never do any FACT checking. Ridiculous!

Guest

They made dentures out of the teeth.

Guest

When a tooth is extracted the roots don’t die. The tooth loses its blood supply but still remains intact. They could easily be used to make Dentures for anyone. And please tell me how Washington would be at risk for an infection? The teeth went in dentures. Your reasoning is faulty.

Guest

They weren't TRANSPLANTED, genius. They were MOUNTED into a dental apparatus. FALSE TEETH. No different than your 'carved ivory' theory, except real teeth, torn out of the mouths of enslaved people.

Guest

It was frequently a dental practice in those days.

Guest

Ivory is the "teeth" of elephants. Is it more hygieinic and less subject to infection than the teeth oif humans?

Guest

You know nothing about dentistry. Google is your friend. Use it. Also, regardless of if they were transplanted, they were still YANKED from the heads of human beings to make the above featured dentures. That is sick.

Guest

Guest

It's documented that he had terrible headaches and potions to sustain him. He probably died from a combination of infection and slow poisonous drugs. He was 67...but you can read the research available you might be better convinced if you do it yourself. That's what I tell my students to do

Guest

I still have all of my baby teeth and my kids' teeth. This is definitely possible. Please don't make assumptions when you don't know how teeth work. Go consult a dentist.

Guest

And maybe after being yanked from their mouths they were shaved. Things that somehow kill us now seemed to be okay when I was a kid in the 70s & 80s. So, I’m not surprised that the teeth didn’t harm him. Then again, he did die relatively early.

Guest

How would it be a high risk for infection? They werent implanted into his gums, they were made into dentures. THIS you don't believe, but you believe they were made from ivory? Hmm....

Guest

http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/george-washingtons-false-teeth-come-slaves-look-evidence-responses-evidence-limitations-history/

Guest

It looks as though the yanked teeth were fitted over his own teeth. Caps? Crowns, if you will. I believe it.

Guest

You do know that if a person gets a tooth knocked out, it can be put back in by a dentist if the tooth is saved in milk or your own saliva. Teeth are just bone with nerve endings. The roots are not like the root of a tree. The root of a tooth simply anchors it in the jaw bone. If Washington had his tooth pulled and a tooth pulled from a slave at the same time, the dentist could transplant it into the socket. The jaw would heal around it to hold it in place and the gum line would heal. It would not have nerve endings, but when a person has a root canal their nerve endings are removed and it does not effect the use of their teeth for chewing. Ivory is the same kind of bone that human teeth are made of, so really the chance of infection would be just as great. This was a horrible thing to do, but possible. Now a days, oral surgeons are using porcelain as teeth and screws to implant it into the jaw bone because implants keep the jaw bone from receeding.

Guest

Do you really think h cared about pulling his teeth or anything ELSE!!! REALLY!!!

Guest

He didn't transplant them medically. He had dentures made from them.

Guest

They were used in a denture. And as germs and their connection to infection wasn’t studied till the 1860’s, it wouldn’t have been a concern to them.

Guest

Teeth are bones you idiot! And I can think of several other things they did back in they day that yes could have caused in an infection but didn't back in the day because people were just immune to it. They were not exactly the cleanest people back then but, alot survived.

Guest

You dope. They were made into dentures not actually transplanted into his mouth like today's implants!

Pillbug

No one said they were bionically implanted. They we implanted into a base as with inserted dentures.

Guest

This is very possible, from a historic perspective. The practice of removing one's teeth voluntarily and involuntarily was quite common on both sides of the Atlantic.
(check out the scene from Les Miserables)
Also, the implant procedure was being used experimentally at this time, and this was not surprisingly, as slaves were considered property. Hence, the master could and did perform unthinkable acts on slaves.
The key point to remember here, is slaves had 0 rights, and anything could be done to them.
If their babies could be snatched away, then what's a few teeth?

http://www.revolutionarywarjournal.com/dentistry/

Guest

Replacing missing teeth with other people's teeth (usually slaves or the poor) was common practice back then. Look it up.

Guest

The article literally says a dentist made him DENTURES from the slave teeth. And "transplanted" is in quotation marks symbolizing that they weren't actually transplanted.

Guest

This should answer your question http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33085031

Robert C.

When the roots of teeth die, the tooth stays intact, though it won't grow any longer. People have root canals every day, which means the root is REMOVED.... and the teeth stay intact. There were several sets of false teeth made for Washington... Throughout his life Washington employed numerous full and partial dentures that were constructed of materials including human, and probably cow and horse teeth, ivory (possibly elephant), lead-tin alloy, copper alloy (possibly brass), and silver alloy.

Ron

A root canal removes the nerves from the canals in the tooth's root it doesn't remove the tooth's root which is the lower portion of the tooth below the gum line and into the tooth's socket in the lower jawbone or upper maxillary jaw bone.

Guest

Yes, I absolutely do believe that could happen. I've had several teeth yanked and though painful, with enough alcohol to kill germs anything is possible. Not to mention DNA or other validation testing which is surely all throughout this research in depth and in more places than one. Maybe you should spend less time trolling and more time being human and humble enough to learn the truth about our collective history

Guest

They weren't implanted into his gums. They were "dead" teeth.

Guest

There are herbs and roots that have antibiotic properties.

Guest

The oppressors will say anything to make themselves look acceptable.

Guest

ask yourself what you're actually denying.

Guest

Forget the teeth. What about the living conditions?

Guest

The roots would’ve filed down before the teeth were set in a denture frame.

Guest

They was all evil .

Guest

[scared] [crying] [thumbdown]

Guest

Just like the black slave owners did...

Guest

"Just the the black slave owners did..." Which matters how, exactly? Even if black slave owners were just as cruel and capricious as white ones, why would that make any difference when we're talking about George Washington? We were all raised to idolize this man, and now some of us are trying to grapple with reality and understand that he wasn't a saint. If black slave owners did this -- well, that's horrible too. But the topic right now is Washington.

Guest

Focus on all that accomplished and stop whining and playing the race card. None of my family did anything like this, as a matter of fact they all fought for the north...but I bet I still have to hear about how all whites are racist huh?? Grow up.

Guest

Ummm....not for everybody: But why is it hard to believe. the cruelest things that have been done have been done by white people. they took slavery to the next level, the mass shootings are done by them.

Guest

"all"? Not most?

Guest

I find so much of American history to be revisionist. I never celebrated this nor so many other racists who stood as president. Time for us all to stop celebrating Washington and other slaveholders, regardless of their status in this society.

Drew Mcilravey

History books are written by those in power. This was a different time in US history. Think about how farm animals are treated today and nothing is really done about it. Turn the clock back a couple centuries and you can see that's how these slaves were treated. For those of you that think humanity has really evolved that much, I would suggest spending some time in a DEVELOPING COUNTRY!

And of course you have mell those “barbaric white slave owners

It still goes on taday.

Giovanni

Thank you for writing this. It should come as a surprise to none that a slave owner is deeply morally flawed, as the mere participation in this evil institutions would warrant tremendous ethical compromise.

Guest

If you inherited slaves in the 18th century, chances are you would have done the same. Maybe you would have provided them with better living conditions and wouldn't have stolen their teeth. But would you have freed them surrendering all your wealth and financial stability, not to mention possibly condemning yourself to imprisonment or death (considering freeing slaves was illegal at the time)? I wouldn't give you that much credit.

Guest

Freeing slaves was not illegal. Washington's were freed less than 2 years after his death. Martha's however, remained slaves. Many of the founding fathers spoke about the evil of slavery, but refused to do anything to stop it.

You are an idiot. The founders tried but we're taken down by a weak federal government. Learn your history.

"Blacks cannot be racist." Sorry, but that's incorrect. ANYONE can be a racist.

Racist: a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

I am not in this debate as I am Canadian but reading some of these comments has appalled me on both ends ...and to the guest that said blacks cannot be racist ...they certainly can and here is the definition I did read it... any race of people can be racist

rac·ist
ˈrāsəst/Submit
noun
1.
a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another
All of this bantering just goes to show me that we have not learned anything from history at all ...we're supposed to be taking care of each other regardless of race Creed or color ...obviously that's not happening.. the things that happened in our history our shameful but we need to move forward and take care of each other

"In 1784, Washington had the teeth of enslaved Black adults “transplanted into” his mouth."

Not possible. Infection would have killed Washington.

"as their garments “dirty,” “fouled,” and “manure”-soaked wool from the stomach of sheep"
All wool is like that, freshly sheared. It comes from sheep. duh

Michael Coard is an idiot, but hey, it fits the narrative.

Guest

They were human teeth. He was just a barbaric man. Also black people cant be racist. We can only be prejudiced. White people have a history of deflecting from a truth of their atrocities and making the truth a claim for racism.

Guest

“Black people can’t be racist.”

Incredibly false! As someone who’s ethnicity is both black and white and has grown up in the belly of both I can tell you from experience I have come across both black and white who are racist! If you believe only white people are racist you are incredibly naive and misinformed!

Look up the definition of racism in the dictionary. Racism is the hatred of one or more races by a person of a different race. Anyone who hates another race is racist! ANYONE!

Guest

So, that’s actually a very common mistake people make when defining “racism.” The actual definition is “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.” So everyone can be prejudiced, discriminatory, or antagonist toward people of another race, or even as you say “hate” them, and still not “racist” because of the lack of supremacy tied to it. A person has to believe that their race is superior, in order to be racist.

Guest

And I guess YOU can't imagine why a black person could be racist/prejudice??? SMH

Guest

1.
a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

I think you are confusing “racist” with “bigot”. They are different. George Washington was a racist. His slaves, hating George Washington, would be bigots.

Guest

Black people cannot be racist because they do not have the power or numbers to effect a system of black supremacy. There has been white supremacy for centuries in the US. Nobody cares about the slur type of racism, it is the institutional racism which is the problem.
Learn what racism really is, not the dictionary definition.

Guest

Shame on you. Quite the complete definition of racism then explore the meaning of prejudice. Racism includes the construction of laws, institutions and behaviors to enforce prejudicial beliefs. That's racism. Such ignorance is astounding

Guest

Truth. To say that one group cannot be racist while another group necessarily IS, is racist.

Guest

The writer does a disservice to the people of color that fought along side General Washington throughout the difficult battles of the revolution. By the way, Washington spent more time in his life trying to make a country away from Mt Vernon, than he actually spent living there. And the little matter of his false teeth, the teeth were not from the teeth of slaves or native indians, or the Hessions or the Loyalists for that matter, they were made of wood.

Guest

What held the teeth in place was wire wrapped into carved wood. The teeth were real human teeth. He had many sets of dentures. Some had a base of wood, some of rubber

Guest

Fought alongside by choice or nah?

Black people can be racist. Many are. To say they can’t be and other racist are, is racist. I assume you are black. You are being racist. This coming from the least proud to be white these days kind of person. Just saying.

Yeah, because female genital mutilation, ritual cannibalism, and burning alive for "witchcraft" all of which happen in 21st century Africa, New Guinea, and other majority-black nations, aren't barbaric atrocities at all, right? RACIST.

Guest Cece

When were the Salem witch trials, Guest? Africa isn't the only place which has had barbaric atrocities. Ritual cannibalism? Jeffrey wasn't ritualistic, was he?

Guest

That doesn't happen in the majority of the 54 African nations, but I'm not surprised at your selective white supremacist narrative of Africa. Unfortunately for you, a lot of people are educated about the real Africa, and the fact that it has the 2nd fastestGDP growth rates in the world, amongst other positive things. Most of the strife in Africa is due to your kind, tormenting chaos and fighting proxy wars all in the name of Africa's resources.
If I were you I would , I would worry about your people that are dropping off from opioids and meth, mass shooting people, committing pedophilia and beastiality, and generally dying off.
Lets not talk about your violent and murderous history all over the world. Now that's barbaric.

Guest

Why can't they be racist. It's funny how white people are always racist but black people aren't. Black people are just as capable.

Guest

You're arguing with a liberal distorted by years of indoctrination in lefty group think. Like everything else liberalism touches it loses all validity, effectiveness, and power.

Guest

Definition of racism - prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is s.

Guest

"Deep within one of Washington’s account books is an entry which details Washington’s purchase of 9 teeth from “Negroes” for 122 shillings." Also he used his own pulled teeth in one of his dentures:"In a drawer in the Locker of the Desk which stands in my study you will find two small (fore) teeth; which I beg of you to wrap up carefully, and send inclosed [sic] in your next letter to me. I am positive I left them there, or in the secret drawer in the locker of the same desk."

Guest

Since the documentation supports paying the slaves for the teeth, how do we know if A) these teeth weren't already out of the mouth (lost by accident, pulled, etc) or B) they were voluntarily given up since they were paid. We don't.

Guest

Supposing it was option B, do you really think they had much choice in the matter even if they were paid? They were enslaved people.

Guest

More likely that their masters were paid for the teeth. What use would a slave have for money? They could not just run to the store for a few things.

I know of farmers who take very good care of their livestock. They are a part of a huge investment, and in some cases are treated better that the farmer provides for his own family. As part of that investment, wouldn't Washington have taken good care of his slaves as well??

Guest

LOL. The author presents historical documentation of what happened and y'all come in here trying to reason against it. Trying to apply logic to a slaveholders treatment of the people he believed he owned. NO ONE TREATED THEIR SLAVES WELL. WTF is wrong with you people?

Guest

I should think that Washington would take care of his slaves, as well as he would his horses. The need to maintain his estate would depend on both. It would be bad business to do otherwise.

Guest

You can suggest whatever ou believe would be logical all you want, but it’s irrelevant. Doesn’t matte what should have happened or what would have been best, THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. History has occurred, been observed and recorded. He didn’t treat them well. He treated them like slaveholders treat slaves.

Guest

Geez, the idea that you might be a real person is very upsetting.
people don't treat horses well either. you live in a fantasy world.
You know who treated slaves well? Slave systems that worked more like penal systems, aka not chattel slavery which is what the US had.

Guest

Disgusting reply.
And you think every slaver - a person who would enslave and own another human being - would be beneath using a human being for their teeth?
As barbaric as this is, much worse took place during this period of our history.

Guest

In the face of actual fact you are choosing to speculate. In de facto he did not treat the people he imprisoned well. If the practice of slavery was not a hardship then why didn’t white people chose to be slaves or enslave each other. The answer is because it was a inhumane system and no one iota to be treated horrificly bad.

Guest

Sorry but if you don't even know that some HOUSE slaves were treated better than FIELD slaves .... that's like Malcolm X 101

Guest

No, because not all farmers are good at that kind of sh*t.

Guest

Are you seriously trying to say he treated slaves aka "prisoners" nicely on HIS behalf? That's dumb asf to believe and you sir are the one that sounds naive. Have they treated anyone they referred to as "personal slaves" nicely? Come on now, he treated them like slaves!!! And why are ppl on here trying to under play any of this as if it's right! To hear this is bizarre and everyone on here trying to defend this nonsense is sick asf. Even if they did sell them, wtf were human beings put in a position to where they were so poor they had to sell their teeth?! And he just happened to be the lucky customer !! And that doesn't sound bizarre to any of you backing this up?! Wierdos

Guest

There are also farmers who give very poor to their livestock even to the point of the government taking them away. So what's your point.

Guest Cece

Do u know personally farmer's who care for their livestock better than their own family? Would u share that info with yr CPS?

Guest

Wow! “Treated their slaves well”? Their SLAVES! What kind of person are you that you think that is okay- to own another human being as long as you treat them well? REALLY? How sick do you have to be to justify that in your head or what kind of belief system do you have about black people that you think “as long as they were treated well” the institution of slavery was okay. Would you want to be a slave? Would you feel better about your family members being a slave if they were treated well? I think you really need to take a good hard look at the person you have become to even write that in a comment section. You are a soulless individual and so was Washington and anyone who thought that was ok to own human beings. Shame on you

And you haven't touched on his attitude as a land speculator vis-a-vis Native Americans. Just as brutal there, as well.

Guest

I'm seeing a lot of misinformation here, so let me try to clear the air. I'm getting my PhD in history.

Yes, it is absolutely true that some of the teeth in his dentures came from slaves. It was also very common practice in the eighteenth century for the wealthy to buy teeth from poor people or slaves who had a good set of teeth. Morbid to us today, but poor whites and slaves often willingly sold their teeth to make a decent amount of money.

Guest

How can a slave willingly sell their teeth? You can't. You have to or else

Guest Cece

Important to document your claims if u want a valid PhD degree. Would u share your sources of info showing poor whites and slaves willingly sold their OWN teeth?

Guest

Check Ron Chernow’s “Washington”, a well written, well researched book which also contains the documentation for his sources. It was common practice for slaves with good teeth to voluntarily sell some of their teeth to the wealthy. Washington paid for his tedth. He did not rip them involuntarily out of their mouths. His slaves had a better, more varied diet than most, including fish from his fishery. He provided a new set of clothes yearly. One can imagine that as the year wore on the clothes wore out. In his will he provided for the freeing (manumission) of his personal slaves.

Guest

So using real teeth to make dentures was common at that time? Makes sense. The writer does not detail if these teeth came from living or deceased slaves. Also, the writer may be the "racist" here, Anyone who had "advantage" owned slaves. Slavery was common. They were commonly treated like livestock. That was "then"

Guest

A slave had no agency over his/her own body, and no legal rights, in addition, they weren’t paid for their labor. Where are you working on your Ph.d?

Guest

I'm trying to figure out why this is so hard to believe?? Slaves had NO SAY in how they were treated. PERIOD. And for any white person to say otherwise is wrong. DON'T SPEAK on a subject that you have nothing to do with. Colonizer.

Guest

YOUR BLACK ANCESTORS captured and sold you into slavery in the first place!! Why do you never talk about that??

Guest

So that nakes it right? There were still options NOT to buy!! You know like drugs, illegal prescriptions and how about sex trafficking!! Are you saying those are ok or if a woman sells a woman its ok? Its kidnapping and being forced into something you don’t want!

Guest

It does not negate the brutality of slavery to describe such things as slaves being paid for teeth. In fact, part of the insidious evil of slavery was normalizing the ownership of human beings while simultaneously engaging in a wide range of ordinary behaviors such as business transactions.

Guest

Washington was pretty slimy overall. He and the other Founding Fathers were land speculators who acquired extensive Indigeous lands w a practice called Extinguishing Indian Title, which had a precedent in the Doctrine of Discovery. Washington alone amassed over 36,000 acres for himself. One of the less publicized reasons for the Revolutionary War was that when the British declared everything west of the Appalacians as Indian lands those guys stood to lose a lot of money as they had presold land there to arriving colonists. After the war Washington also ordered the destruction of over 100 Native towns that had sided w the British, and his men skinned the victims to make boot tops and leggings. He was dubbed the Town Destroyer.

I'm from Philly, there are areas of center City that have historical markers that say this is where George Washington slave quarters used to be. And in valley forge which I've been to several times has his dentures on display they said the teeth were made of animal teeth. But now I wonder if that was true . I remember thinking the molars didn't look human. I wonder if he had more than one set.

K.B. Shinn

He did. Other sets were made out of gold, ivory, hippopotamus teeth and donkey teeth. Maybe the human set was the most natural looking? I had a feeling that his human-teeth dentures came from slaves, but the tiny part of me that isn't cynical hoped they were collected post-mortem.

http://gwpapers.virginia.edu/george-washingtons-false-teeth-come-slaves-look-evidence-responses-evidence-limitations-history/

Doesn't sound like we have enough evidence to indicate what actually happened, other than that some of his teeth do appear to have come from black people, and there's some reason to believe they may have been enslaved.

It's definitely important not to make him out to be a god, but I think Washington's greatness is in his ability to grow as a human being throughout his life. He made difficult decisions that forged the path of the country, including freeing his slaves against his family's wishes. This was probably significant in bringing society more towards the point of ending slavery, and there are always problems with trying to judge any person of the past by modern standards.

Aside from the teeth......I'm not sure how accurate the info is about "president's" day. Because of the wording it sounds as if the writer is saying the date we celebrate was established in 1885. What happened in 1885 was the recognition of Washington's birthday on the 22nd (which is also my birthday)...then in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, established the 3rd Monday in February as a holiday to give yet another 3 day weekend to the working public.

Guest

The founding fathers were aristocratic landowners that saw an opportunity to steal land from the natives and the nation that colonized it. That's all. They didn't want to pay taxes. They saw an opportunity and took it by throwing bodies and bullets at the challenge. They weren't saints.

I always ask PEOPLE, “Do you know anyone, other than Black people, with the last name Washington or Jefferson?” I can’t say I know any. Now think of all the slaves that both owned. All the murdering, torture, & rapes they committed! So much, the only people with the last names... Washington or Jefferson, are BLACK! 😡

Guest

Well it could also be because when slaves were freed they didn’t have last names, so they took their master’s last name as their own. Something tells me masters we’re not giving their last names to their children with the slaves. So all of the slaves they owned went on with their lives with their last names. And it grew from there. At least that’s what I read somewhere.

R. Haynes

Seems like I remember many years ago, George Washington's crude dentures were made from ivory and carved hippo teeth. There was a museum photograph of these artifacts which certainly did not match the photo included in this article. In addition, these dentures had later been reported as stolen by the museum which owned them. Hmmm...an error, or an attempted re-writing of history?

Guest

According to the University of Virginia and the Smithsonian, there is no definitive proof that Washington had teeth from his slaves in his dentures, although it is likely. The proof that does exist is that he paid nine separate slaves 2 guineas apiece for a tooth with no mention of what was done with those teeth. What is left out of this story is that the practice of purchasing teeth was fairly common among the affluent of the day in Europe and the United States and most of those who sold their teeth were free people. The recording of payment for the teeth, even if much less than would have been given to a free person, suggests that the giving of teeth was voluntary although that cannot be verified.

Guest

Ladies and gentlemen- take it easy. In the 1700's U.S. slaves were chattel. Property, plain and simple. Just like slaves had been since time immemorial. Slaves have always been treated like slaves! The Hebrews, Greeks, Africans, Romans, Chinese (truly all dominant cultures in history) took slaves, employed then as tools and went on with their business.
Let's face it, wouldn't you enjoy owning a slave? ( Your choice of color) the fact is, everyone would. As they should.
But these are new times and we've decided to finally play nice with one another: no more slaves anywhere. But it's not quite that simple.
In Washington's day (despite the author's complete b.s. descriptions of GW's slave treatment) human, African slaves were a highly valuable commodity. A thoroughbred of a male could sell for $100,000 in today's dollars. And please let's don't forget, it was the African selling her to the European. Thank God for them (the slaves) that they made it to George Washington's America- because really, have you seen Africa over the last 200 years? Or the last 5?
The very idea that a man so graced with virtue, courage, wisdom (read him) style and classiness (he turned down a crown) could alternately and unaccountedly be so cruel, mean and barbaric towards his highly valuable workforce is completely absurd.
Revisionist history folks. The mistreatment is slaves is a troop designed to engender anger and jealousy towards whites in order to realign the power structure. I dig it.
Quick question: if you owned 300 slaves whom were responsible for bringing in the cash crops and taking care of your family, would you treat them miserably or generously?
I absolutely refuse to believe that George Washington was a terrible owner to his slaves because his life held so much virtue otherwise. In conclusion, FHRITP.

'Obama out.'

You apparently know nothing about slavery, and nothing about Washington, who as an enslaved of human beings proved himself capable of heinous cruelty towards people who did him no harm. This while professing a love of freedom and liberty. He hunted Oney Judge, an enslaved woman who cleverly planned her escape from bondage, for decades, hunting her like a dog. He was, as were all enslavers, beasts and monsters who lived off of and enriched themselves off of you the sweat and blood of the enslaved people. Thank God beasts like Washington and his ideological descendants were finally defeated in the Civil War. If you want to know what slavery was like, you don’t ask the slaveholders who have financial interests in maintaining their heinous institution and enslaved women to rape, little boys to sodomize, babies to steal and sell. You ask those who were enslaved. Read slave narratives if you want an honest view of slavery. You don’t rely on accounts of indolent, drunken, slaveholding beasts.

What a bunch of rubbish from a person who clearly hates white people. Please remember it was the Africans themselves that readily handed off their own people for money.

They weren’t “their own people “ anymore than the Jews were “their own people “ with respect to Germans. They were enemy combatants. Also,Africans didn’t devises a heinous system of inherited chattel slavery, fugitive slave laws, the selling of mothers from babies, and the raping of children, then selling their babies. No people in all
of history d bided a system of enslavement to match the Atlantic Slave Trade in barbarity and savagery.

From Snopes: The exhibit does not disappoint. One look at the contraption itself, which is actually made out of metal, ivory, and real teeth (both animal and human), is enough to see that it wasn’t carved out of wood:

Here is an example of why technology is so dangerous. The ability of humans to create technology has greatly surpassed their ability (generally speaking) to think clearly and to act compassionately. Sad.

All you Caucasians going crazy ....your history is foul. ...I'm black and proud....

Ha! This 'author' (what a joke) is a disgusting Black racist. It's always surprising to White people how hateful and racist Blacks are... but that's something their culture nurtures, like the ignorance they cling to. What an odious stink this foul creature puts out along with the lies.
Washington's dentures are CLEARLY made of ivory, you'd have to be a moron not to be able to simply look at the photo without seeing the characteristics that tell you that. 1)They are carved, and rather crudely (the 'anatomy' that a natural tooth has is missing from the contact surfaces of the molars, the non-molars are far too thick at the ends, and crudely fashioned, and the 'root' areas at the base of the 'teeth' are not fashioned to resemble actual teeth at all, but to fit into the slot in the wooden bridgework that holds them. 2)Ivory yellows with age, and also splits along vertical grain lines in the ivory material, which is much softer than bone or tooth enamel. The darker vertical grain lines in it, the ivory breakage, AND the yellowing of the material in the photo clearly shows they are made of carved ivory. It's obvious to anyone who's ever handled ivory. And the museum states they are ivory, an unneeded confirmation of the obvious (unmistakable) visual clues. Washington was indeed a great man, truly the Father of our nation, for without him there would have been no independence from colonialism... and the racist Blacks who spew their filthy lies would not have the 'right' to do so under the shelter of the First Amendment of our Constitution... which was created with Washington's support. The racist, hate mongering Blacks like this putrid 'author' wallow in the vomit of their own self-loathing, preferring it to the glorious freedom & access to every single modern invention and convenience afforded them through the science and industrious efforts of the White population that they so despise. The truth is these cursed people hate themselves because they have no ability to produce anything meaningful to advance civilization.. and they are just 150 or 200 years from the stone age life their ancestors lived in dirt huts in the jungle, which they should be living now instead of being a plague upon a better people. They know they don’t fit in, but are filled with greed and envy. They are truly people of low function, a foul and ugly creation that no one can safely give their trust to. Pure evil in so many of their hearts, sociopaths who have no soul, and can murder without thought or emotion. If this 'author' represents the nature of a Black person, and we value truth, decency, and safety from evil beings, then you can never accept them. And you who believed this lowest form of human trash for even a second, shame on you!

This "article" is ridiculous! It is a total fabrication and the "sources" cited are not credible. This article is racist.

Odd, I just saw this elsewhere: Nowhere is it said that GW did this.

This is where the limitations of history come into play. The only documentation of which we are aware of George Washington purchasing teeth from slaves is a brief notation in his ledger books.1 The physical evidence, a pair of Washington’s dentures that includes human teeth, is part of the collection at Mount Vernon.2 As to the circumstances surrounding the creation of these dentures, the best historians can do is make an educated guess. Like all historical theories, this conclusion should be grounded in historical context, supplemental primary and secondary documents, and sound reasoning. But without further documentation, it is impossible to describe the scenario in definitive terms. We are not even entirely positive that the teeth whose price is recorded in the Ledger Book are the same as those in the dentures.

Lund Washington, George’s distant cousin who managed Mount Vernon during the Revolution, made a notation in the plantation ledger books for May 1784: “By Cash pd Negroes for 9 Teeth on Acct of Dr. Lemoire.” This “Dr. Lemoire” was almost certainly George Washington’s dentist, Dr. Jean Le Mayeur, who corresponded with George Washington about his visit to Mount Vernon that summer.3

Wherever Dr. Le Mayeur practiced, he sought out through newspaper ads “Persons who are willing to dispose of their Front Teeth.”4 While in New York, he advertised that he would pay two guineas each for good front teeth; in Richmond, he stipulated “slaves excepted.”5 That could explain why the price noted by Lund Washington was so low. Nine teeth sold for two guineas each would be worth almost nineteen pounds; Washington paid only slightly more than six pounds.

Without further documentation, we can only speculate on the sequence of events leading to the inclusion of human teeth in George Washington’s dentures. Perhaps Dr. Le Mayeur offered George Washington a deal in which Washington saved on teeth by buying them at a much-discounted rate from his own slaves rather than from Dr. Le Mayeur.

Wow. Some of the dumbest comments I have ever read are attached to this article.

Not to mention the atrocities the buffalo soldiers did to native americans, raping, killing women and children descrating their bodies. No none of us are saints, thank God I dontbhave to pay for my ancestors sins. I thank Almighty God I was born a free American.

Can't believe most of the people commenting are focused on how those Washington's ill-gotten teeth were use, instead how they were obtained. But I guess his sadistic treatment of black people is just a historical footnote.
