November is a time when many families will be preparing bountiful Thanksgiving feasts. The children at Stony Creek Elementary School in the Wissahickon School District are grateful for these gatherings in their own homes but also recognize the families that aren’t so fortunate. “This time of year most families are thinking about all they have to be thankful for,” said Doris Fox, community service chair for Stony Creek. “But, the students at Stony Creek Elementary School realize there are many folks that are facing tough times during this holiday season, and they may not have as much to be thankful about.” The students decided they would lend a helping hand. “The students and their families are turning this season of thanking into a time of giving, and finding ways they can help others,” said Fox. The school, at 1721 Yost Road in Blue Bell, will host its second annual Giving Night on Friday, Nov. 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. More than 200 students and their families are expected. “During the evening, students will actively participate in projects designed to help families and children in need, senior citizens and others in the local community,” Fox said. One way the kids will be involved is by making sandwiches. “Students will roll up their sleeves to make bologna and cheese sandwiches and assemble snack bags filled with wholesome foods for a local shelter,” Fox said. Yet the students aren’t stopping with food. “They will create colorful scarves for children in foster homes, assemble boxes filled with crafts and small toys for children in hospitals and shelters; make door decorations and holiday ornaments for residents of nursing homes; make special toys for homeless cats and dogs, and write thank-you cards for local veterans.” Alex’s Lemonade Stand will also be at the event. Students will run the stand to collect money for the children’s cancer research organization. Students are also holding a drive during the night to donate gently used winter gear and clothes for children in need. The varied activities are all designed to help those in need in the Montgomery County and surrounding areas. “In our efforts to help our students be empathetic toward others, the upcoming Giving Night program offers our students and their families a way to get actively involved in helping the less fortunate in our community,” said Gary W. Abbamont, principal of Stony Creek Elementary School. “This highly successful event from last year’s calendar is back on the calendar for this school year and promises to attract more family participants and benefit more members of our community.” For more information on the Giving Night, call Stony Creek Elementary School at (215) 619-8108.
