Marvin O’Connor, former Saint Joseph’s basketball star, will be inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame. O’Connor will join Angela Zampella (Saint Joseph’s), Phil Jasner (Media, Philadelphia Daily News), Jen Ricco (Temple) and Trish Juhline (Villanova).
O’Connor (1999–2002), a Simon Gratz product, won the Geasey Award (Big 5 Player of the Year) in 2001 and was a three-time Big 5 first team selection. He was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree and was the top scorer in the Big 5 (Palumbo Award) in 2001. O’Connor ranks 12th on the Hawks’ all-time scoring list with 1,678 career points. He averaged double figures in all three of his seasons.
Temple’s Anthony Lee named Big 5 Player of the Week
The Philadelphia Big 5 honored Anthony Lee as the Big 5 Player of the Week. Lee averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds a game in a 1-1 week for the Owls. He scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds against Xavier and followed that up with a 20-point, 10-rebound effort in a win over Saint Louis, helping snap SLU’s nine game winning streak.
Tonya Cardoza gets 100th win, team captures Atlantic 10 opener
Tonya Cardoza, Temple’s fifth year head coach, got the 100th win of her career thanks to a strong rally by Temple women’s basketball team over the final six minutes at St. Bonaventure (7-9 overall, 0-1 league). The Owls (7-8 overall, 1-0 league) won their Atlantic 10 Conference opener 67-59 after trailing by seven with 6:03 left in the game.
Cardoza now stands at 100-46, and reached the milestone with a win over the only team to defeat Temple in the A-10 regular season last year.
Temple-George Washington to be televised by Comcast SportsNet
The Temple men’s basketball game at George Washington on Wednesday, Jan. 16 will be televised by Comcast SportsNet. The game starts at 7 p.m. Temple is coming off a 64-54 win over Saint Louis last week.
Tickets on sale for CIAA basketball tournament
The general public all-session tickets for the CIAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament are available online. Fans can go to www.ciaatournament.org to order tickets. The tournament will be held from Feb. 26 to March 2. The tournament will be played at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. The CIAA is the oldest, Black college basketball tournament in the country. The tournament features some of the best Division II players in college basketball.
