  • Joan Fontaine Caffee, Educator

Joan Fontaine Caffee was an advocate for education.

She died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013. She was 70.

Caffee was born July 31, 1942.

Caffee was employed by the School District of Philadelphia for more than 30 years. After joining the school district, she worked at several schools including her alma mater, Murrell Dobbins Vocational-Technical School. She held positions ranging from senior secretary to executive secretary at the administration building which was located at 21st and the Parkway.

“You would have thought she was a counselor because she affectionately mentored the students in schools where she worked. She was loved and respected by staff as well as the students. She willingly gave advice and wise counsel to all who were in need,” her family said.

She was a member of the Ruth Hayre Scholarship Fund at Dobbins AVT School and for many years worked diligently to help graduates pursue their college dreams. Her loyal service to the organization led her to be honored for dedication and fund raising efforts. Caffee donated her time to the Scholarship Fund for years after retiring.

Caffee enjoyed talking on the phone, hosting Thanksgiving dinner for her family every year and giving her grandchildren, one-of-a-kind gifts.

She is survived by her children, Denise (Charles), Darryl (Tanya), and Lynne (Chad); grandchildren: Laurel, Darryl, Jr., Taryn, Brandon and Lauryn; sister, Verna Oliver; two nieces and one nephew: Dawn, Jodi and Sean; great-nephews: Tyron and Julian; goddaughter: Milan; and other relatives friends.

A memorial service was held February 15 at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, located 230 West Coulter Street.
