Eleanor Jane Holmes was a longtime member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ.
Holmes died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012. She was 102.
She was born May 18, 1910 to Henry White and Florence Miller-White in Willamsport.
Holmes became a member of the Church of God and Saints of Christ at an early age.
After the White family relocated to Philadelphia, she was educated in the School District of Philadelphia.
She was a member of the Church of God’s Philadelphia Tabernacle where she served on the choir, joined the sewing circle during her pre-teen years, served in the church restaurant and delivered baskets of food to the poor.
In 1979, Holmes joined the Church of God’s Tabernacle in Trenton, N.J. where she was appointed choir mistress and served on various committees. She was active with the charitable committee of the Daughters of Jerusalem and Sisters of Mercy; look-out committee, sick committee and the pastor’s table committee.
She helped solicit food items for the church’s annual Thanksgiving dinners, worked to raise funds for the annual local block rally and assisted in the church’s delicatessen.
She ministered to patients at Methodist Hospital for more than 30 years. During her tenure, she received many commendations for outstanding service and loyalty.
In her golden years, Holmes relocated to Belleville, Va. where she continued to serve the Church of God. She volunteered to maintain the upkeep of the memorial and offered her services to the LSP Learning Center.
Holmes enjoyed gardening, preparing succulent dishes and keeping up with the latest styles and fashions.
Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Holmes, and her son, Thomas.
She is survived by her son, Joseph; daughters, Mary Ward (Frank), Sarah Holloman (Alvin), Beatrice A. Crowdy-Turner; godson, Elder James E. Hill Sr.; goddaughters, Sylvia W. Crowdy and Natalie Weathers; 17 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Services will be held Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at Church of God and Saints of Christ, 602-14 S. Broad St. Burial will be in Belleville Cemetery, Suffolk, Va.
Wood Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
