Janet Harrison Shannon, 70

Dr. Janet Harrison Shannon was a professor of sociology.

Shannon died June 27, 2012, at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 70.

She was born July 5, 1941, in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of the late Paul Harrison Jr. and Anna Mae Harris Harrison. She graduated from Girls’ High School and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Saint Joseph’s University.

Having a zest to learn more in the field of education, Shannon studied at Temple University and earned a master’s degree in urban studies and a doctorate in sociology.

“Shaping young adult minds was a passion for her and she enjoyed teaching immensely,” her family said.

She relocated to North Carolina and retired as a sociology professor from Davidson College, Davidson, N.C. She was affiliated with the Black Students Union of the college.

Shannon was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Jill (Lorenzo) DeBose of Salisbury; son, Lawrence M. (Dari) Shannon, Jr. of Newport News, Va., a sister-cousin, Rose Marie Murray of Philadelphia; six grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Visitation and viewing will be held July 9 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 5537-39 West Girard Avenue. Burial will be in Rolling Green Memorial Park, West Chester, Pa.
