Center in the Park, a nonprofit organization dedicated to older citizens in Northwest Philadelphia, will host its 45th annual Thanksgiving luncheon Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the building at 5818 Germantown Ave.
“The Thanksgiving meal is special for a number of reasons; although we serve lunch to an average of 100 older adults Monday through Friday, for some our participants, the holidays are times when they are alone for one reason or another,” said Lynn Harris, executive director of Center in the Park. “Therefore, for some, it will be their only Thanksgiving meal and they choose to spend it with the Center participants and staff, who are like family to them.”
The meal will be prepared and partially contributed by members of the Mount Airy Baptist Church and served by Center in the Park and board members.
This event will feature more than just food; it will also offer raffle prizes, live entertainment and more events to help the guests feel comfortable.
“This event is also a time that members express reasons why they are thankful for having CIP, which promotes positive aging and combats isolation,” Harris said.
The Center in the Park has been around since 1968 and has held has provided a variety of services to the area. It offers resources suggesting places to live, health and fitness centers, arts and humanities, and gives residents a chance to speak out on their community and say what they want to see changed or improved.
