Public League teams selected

Christian BlackwellChristian Blackwell has consistently been one of the top baseball players in the Public League. Blackwell, an outstanding shortstop for Overbrook High School, was selected to the coaches’ All-Public League baseball team.

The 6-foot, 174-pound senior played third base on the Public League team, which competed in the Carpenter’s Cup earlier this week. Blackwell had to work extremely hard to land a spot on this team, composed of some of the best players in the league.

“It was like 100 players that tried out for the team,” Blackwell said. “I had to go to Frankford for one tryout. Then, I had to go to Central twice before they let me know that I had made the team. They definitely had a lot of players who wanted to play in the Carpenter’s Cup.”

Blackwell grew up playing baseball in the Phillies’ RBI program. He picked up a good foundation for the game and proved his game each year. He will be playing college baseball for Penn State Greater Allegheny next season.

“The school isn’t far from Pittsburgh,” Blackwell said. “I talked to the baseball coach. I had to send him some statistics and information about me. I think it’s a great opportunity for me. I want to play shortstop in college. I usually watch Jimmy Rollins (Phillies shortstop) and a lot of players during the summer. Right now, I’m playing American Legion baseball at Papa Playground (68th and Lansdowne Avenue). I think the competition will really help me get ready to play at Penn State.”

There’s a first and second teams picked by the coaches in each division along with a Most Valuable Player.
