Central vs. Washington highlights weekend

There should be some interesting football matchups in Public and Catholic leagues this weekend. These games should feature some talented players at the skilled positions.

Central will host George Washington on Friday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. The Lancers (3-0) have a well balanced offense with quarterback Jonathan Henderson (11-of-19 passes for 204 yards and 4 touchdowns), wide receiver Walter Pegues (3 receptions for 51 yards), and running backs Jesse Gillis (32 carries for 206 yards) and Hakeem Ellis (18 attempts for 146 yards).

The Eagles (4-0) have a pretty nice ground attack with running backs Marquis Edwards (27 carries for 117 yards and 1 TD) and Ken Everage (28 carries for 168 yards).

Bartram (1-3) will travel to Marcus Foster Stadium to face Simon Gratz (4-0) at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs have one of the league’s best quarterbacks in Davone Cornish. The Simon Gratz signal caller has completed 26-of-65 passes for 545 yards and 10 TDs. Cornish’s prime target is wide receiver Cornelius Middleton who has 11 receptions for 267 yards and 7 TDs. Bartram’s top player is Elijah Clark, the Maroon wave’s terrific running back. Clark has rushed for 367 yards on 59 carries while scoring 3 TDs.

Cardinal O’Hara (3-1) will entertain Archbishop Wood (3-1) at 7 p.m. Wood continues to be one of the premiere teams in the league. The team is led by running back LaQuille Nesbitt, who has rushed for 219 yards on 32 attempts while scoring 2 TDs. Running back Thaddius Smith (37 carries for 269 yards) and quarterback Dashawn Darden (39-of-67 passes for 490 yards and 5 TDs) are O’Hara’s key players.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, High School of the Future (1-3) will visit Imhotep Charter (4-0). The kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. at 1100 E. Sedgwick St. David Williams, Imhotep Charter’s outstanding running back, has rushed for more than 3,000 yards in his scholastic career. He has 33 carries for 353 yards and 5TDs. Imhotep Charter has a great passing game with quarterback Andre Dreuitt (22-of-38 passes for 421 yards and 6 TDs) and wide receiver Eerin Young (9 receptions for 177 yards and 5 TDs).

Roman Catholic (2-1) will battle St. Joseph’s Prep (3-0) at Northeast High’s Charles Martin Stadium, Cottman and Algon Avenues. The kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Cahillites have a big time receiver with William Fuller who has 14 catches for 215 yards and 2 TDs. Roman Catholic also has a strong ground attack with running backs Dimetri Kelly (44 rushes for 282 yards and 7 TDs) and Malik Jones (17 carries for 260 yards and 3 TDs). Running back Chris Martin is the player to watch for St. Joseph’s Prep. Martin has 38 carries for 230 yards.

West Catholic will go on the road to face Bishop McDevitt at Cheltenham. The kickoff is at 7 p.m. Running back Greg White and wide receiver Shaquille James have been major standouts for the Burrs. White has rushed 61 times for 448 yards and 7 TDs. James has 9 receptions for 160 yards and 2 TDs. McDevitt’s big offensive contributors have been running back Gerald Fuller(45 carries for 178 yards) and quarterback Christian Connor (21-of-57 passes for 414 yards and 5 TDs).
