Adrese Hicks knows the interest a local rivalry garners when Cheyney University meets Lincoln University in one of the oldest Black college football games in the country. These two HBCUs will face each other on Saturday, Sept. 1 in the “Battle of the First” at Lincoln University’s new stadium. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.

Hicks plays defensive back for Cheyney. The former Roxborough High star is anticipating a big game in the season opener for both schools.

“I can’t wait to play,” said Hicks, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior. “I’m so excited right now. It’s a big rivalry game. Everybody looks forward to playing Lincoln. We had a close game with them last year. We were able to win (21-19). It should be a real good one.”

Hicks is one of the team’s best defenders. Ken Lockard, Cheyney head coach, has been very impressed with his play as well as his leadership skills.

“Adrese has been a real leader for us,” Lockard said. “He’s one of our upperclassman. He’s a special talent. He came out last year and did some things in the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) that opened some eyes. Everybody knows who he is and they’re going to have to prepare for him.”

Hicks has the ability to come up and stop the run with his tackling ability. He can also run with most receivers in the league. He’s become a good defender against the pass for the Wolves. He led the team with three interceptions. In addition, Hicks had 47 total and 37 solo tackles.

“I worked hard over the summer,” Hicks said. “I wanted to get stronger. I’m ready to get started. I feel pretty good about the season.”

Cheyney finished the season with a 1-10 overall and 0-7 record in the conference last season. The Wolves only victory was against the Lions. However, Cheyney lost a couple of close games to Millersville (10-7) and East Stroudsburg (10-6) in the PSAC.

Of course, Cheyney would like to get the season off to a good start with a victory over its arch rival. It should be a big afternoon crowd at the Lions’ new stadium.

“When it comes to a rivalry game, it’s going to be a battle,” Lockard said. “That’s a rivalry. It is one heck of a game. I’m excited about going over there in their new stadium for the first game of the season. It’s going to be fun.”
