ESSINGTON, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police say rapper Beanie Sigel has been arrested on weapon and drug charges in suburban Philadelphia.
Troopers say Sigel was in a car pulled over for a traffic stop early Wednesday on Interstate 95 in Tinicum Township.
Police say they found a gun in the car's console. They say both Sigel and the driver are felons banned from having such weapons.
Sigel also faces drug charges after troopers say they found him carrying prescription pills and codeine syrup. Sigel's lawyer did not immediately return a call for comment.
The 38-year-old rapper is already scheduled to begin a two-year prison sentence Sept. 12 for failing to pay federal taxes.
Sigel's real name is Dwight Grant. His latest album, called "This Time," was released on Tuesday. -- (AP)
PHILADELPHIA — Rapper Beanie Sigel has been sentenced in Philadelphia to two years in prison for failing to file federal income tax returns.
The 38-year-old's real name is Dwight Grant, and he's from the Philadelphia suburb of Lansdale. He was sentenced in federal court Thursday and ordered to report to prison Sept. 12. He pleaded guilty in August.
Prosecutors say Sigel owes more than $700,000 for the tax years 1999 through 2005.
A U.S. District Court judge ordered him to pay all taxes, penalties and interest as determined by the Internal Revenue Service. The rapper told the judge he accepted "total responsibility" for not paying his taxes.
Sigel also has served time on drug and weapons charges and for prescription drug use while on federal probation. His albums include "The Truth," ''The B. Coming" and "The Solution." -- (AP)
A Philadelphia Police officer was struck and killed by an automobile in the vicinity of Musgrave Streets and Meehan Avenue in the city’s east Mt. Airy section Sunday night July 15, and investigators said it was not a random accident, but murder.
Details are still sketchy, but according to investigators, just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, Officer Marc Brady, 32, was hit by a white Acura while riding his bicycle. He was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the car, identified as Kareem Alleyne, 35, of the 900 block of Price Street, didn’t flee the scene of the incident but remained there until police arrived.
Homicide detectives determined that Brady was en-route to see his ex-fiancée and ran into her Alleyne, her current boyfriend and an argument ensued. As of Tribune press time, Alleyne has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Brady was an eight-year veteran of the force and was assigned to the 22nd Police District.
Rapper Beanie Sigel Convicted on Tax Evasion
Once again, rapper Beanie Sigel is in state custody, following his sentencing in federal court to two years in prison for failing to pay his taxes.
Sigel, whose real name is Dwight Grant, 38, pleaded guilty to the charges in August 2011. Federal prosecutors alleged that Sigel did not file tax returns from 1999 through 2002, except for a $10,000 tax payment in 2001. According to federal prosecutors Sigel earned more than $2.2 million in taxable income between 1999 and 2005 and owed Uncle Sam $728,536 for those six years.
Sigel has been in trouble with the law before. In 2003 he was arrested and charged with attempted murder in a shooting incident. He was acquitted of the charges. In 2009 he was arrested again and faced drug charges for possession of 50 grams of marijuana.
Hundred Dollar Flim Flam
The Philadelphia Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect responsible for a flimflam robbery. Between April 2012, and June 2012, the suspect has committed several thefts while distracting the cashier. According to investigators in the 1st Police District, the suspect entered several businesses and paid for an item with a $100 dollar bill. When the cashier gives the suspect his change, he distracts the cashier and leaves with the $100 dollar bill and the change.
Investigators said the first robbery occurred on April 18, 2012. The unidentified suspect entered a business located at 934 East Moyamensing Avenue and paid for an item with a $100 dollar bill. As the cashier was giving the suspect his change the suspect distracted the cashier and took the $100 dollar bill back and left with the change.
On July 9, 2012, the suspect entered the Ultimo Coffee Shop located at 1900 South 15th Street and placed an order. As before, the suspect paid the cashier with a $100 dollar bill, while he is given his change the suspect attempted to distract the cashier. The cashier saw through the scam and confronted the suspect. The suspect then became violent and assaulted a store employee.
The suspect is described as a Black male, 50 to 60 years old. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall, bald and weighs about 210 pounds.
