“Modern Spirit,” the captivating exhibit by African-American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner, currently on display at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), will be featured in the February installment of “Friday Arts,” airing at 8:30 p.m. Friday on WHYY.
“Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit,” which explores the life and work of the artist through a “definitive retrospective of his career,” is a traveling exhibition curated by PAFA staff that mounts more than 100 pieces, including the two known sculptures Tanner completed, 12 paintings that have never been shown in a Tanner retrospective and his “career-making” “Resurrection of Lazarus,” which is making its first trip to the continent. Tanner, who lived in Philadelphia after the Civil War, studied at PAFA. The exhibition continues through April 15.
The “Friday Arts” “Art of Life” segment will feature cardiologist-turned-singer-songwriter Suzie Brown, while “Art of Food” will focus on the medicinal purposes of herbs from Pennsylvania Hospital’s “Flower to Pharmacy” exhibition.
“This season, WHYY will give viewers an up-close look at affecting, inspiring art,” WHYY Executive Producer Trudi Brown said of the Emmy Award-winning “Friday Arts.” “Viewers will get to experience a slice of the region’s performing arts and find out what drives some artists in revealing interviews.
