The girls Public League basketball semifinals will take place at Germantown High School on Wednesday, Feb. 20. In the first game, Imhotep Charter (17-6) will battle Prep Charter (18-3) at 5 p.m. In the second contest, Communications Tech (11-2) will face Central (14-5) at 7 p.m.
Imhotep Charter topped High School of the Future, 63-38 to get to the semifinals. Destiny Russell and Shaquayah Matthews each had a game-high 18 points. Other key players to watch for Imhotep Charter include Ashley Murray, Bianca Dunham, Deja Reynolds and Yolanda Dantzler. Imhotep won the Class AA title.
Prep Charter, which happens to be one of the strongest teams in the Philadelphia area, crushed Freire Charter, 68-15. Ciera Nimmons had a team high 18 points. Hannah Timmons and Ciana Cryor had 13 and 11 points respectively for the Huskies. Prep Charter won the Class AAA championship.
Communications Tech had a terrific performance defeating Paul Robeson, 63-41. Khidijah Gardner had 29 points and 17 rebounds. Bryce Garrett had 11 points and six steals. Communications Tech has some other great players such as Ashanty Wallace, Micia McBurnette and Sydney Barrow. The Phoenix won the Class A crown.
Central edged Girls High, 64-60 to advance to the semifinals. Central has a great basketball tradition like Prep Charter. Ashley Morris is the Lancers head coach. Morris won four Public League championships at Central. She also played Division I basketball at Temple. Central has some good all-around players such as Kayla Henderson, Katona Payne and Shanique Mattis. The Lancers won the Class AAAA championship.
