When Neumann-Goretti faces St. Joseph’s Prep for the Catholic League championship on Monday, February 27 at the Palestra, this will be N-G’s fourth consecutive trip to the league title game. The Saints are three-time Catholic League champions. The tipoff will be at 8:15 p.m.
Needless to say this will be a huge game for the Saints. Ja’Quan Newton, Neumann-Goretti shooting guard, has been an explosive player in the open court. Newton had a team-high 17 points in Neumann-Goretti’s 73-56 win over Roman Catholic in the league semifinals. He’s looking forward to playing for another league crown.
“It feels great to be back here once again to compete for a championship,” Newton said. “We’re going on our four-peat and it feels great. I have some great teammates. I’ve known these guys since junior high school and AAU. I love these guys like a family.”
Newton’s teammates include 6-foot-5 Derrick Stewart, 5-foot-8 Billy Shank and 6-foot-4 John Davis. La’Quan Coaxum and Hanif Sutton have been solid contributors for the Saints, too.
St. Joseph’s Prep advanced to the league championship round by defeating Archbishop Carroll, 58-49, in the league semifinals. Miles Overton had a solid game for St. Joseph’s Prep. Overton tallied a game-high 20 points for the Hawks. The 6-foot-3 guard is averaging 14.9 points a game. Overton and Stephen Vasturia, a Notre Dame recruit, have formed a pretty good combination this season.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” Overton said. “I thought we had a chance to get here. We’ve played great the whole season except for a couple setbacks. But I’m really happy with our season.”
